Chargers Interested in Panthers WR Steve Smith?

Numerous reports have indicated this offseason how there’s a good chance wide receiver Steve Smith won’t be back with the Carolina Panthers in 2011. One team that may try to bring on the four-time Pro Bowler–the San Diego Chargers.

According to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers are interested in Smith and are monitoring to see what happens with him in Carolina this offseason. Smith has two years remaining on his contract and is scheduled to make $14.75 million over the next two seasons–so now the main question is whether or not the Chargers would be willing to pay that much for the wide receiver.

All signs point to Smith being on his way out of Carolina considering how unhappy he’s been with the team over the last two seasons. The team is in a re-building mode with a young receiving corps and considering how much he struggled in 2010–the Panthers best option may be to part ways with Smith and at least try to gain something in return.

Of course, none of this can happen until the lockout comes to an end–so all of this trade talk surrounding Smith could go on for a few more months.
