Carolina Panthers Choose Cam Newton With First Pick of 2011 NFL Draft

The Carolina Panthers selected Auburn quarterback Cam Newton with the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft on Thursday. The former Heisman Trophy brings excitement and plenty of talent to an organization that finished just 2-14 last season–the worst record in football.

With all of the questions surrounding Jimmy Clausen at quarterback, the Panthers knew Newton was too talented of a quarterback to pass on with the No. 1 pick. Clausen threw for just three touchdowns as a rookie–but the argument can be made the reason behind those numbers was due to his lack of receiving corps behind Steve Smith.

Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2010 while leading Auburn to the National Championship. He may have played just one season with the Tigers, but it should be interesting to see what type of impact Newton brings to the Panthers as a rookie. If anything, Newton should bring some excitement to a Panthers’ offense that averaged just 12.2 points per game last season.
