DeAngelo Williams will become a free agent after Panthers place franchise tag on Ryan Kalil

Last weekend, NFL Network Insider Jason La Canfora indicated that the Carolina Panthers were leaning towards letting running back DeAngelo Williams become a free agent and use the franchise tag on either center Ryan Kalil or defensive end Charles Johnson. On Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced that the Panthers placed the tag on Kalil–which means Williams will become one of the top free agents from this year’s class.

Despite the move, the chances are still high Williams will re-sign with the Panthers as they will most likely try to reach a long-term agreement with him once a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is in place. However, by allowing Williams to hit free agency, there’s always that chance he could end up with a different team. The Miami Dolphins expressed a strong interest in Williams last month and considering Carolina will still be in re-building mode in 2011–he could easily leave if another team offered him a larger contract.

While he missed most of last season with a foot injury, Williams has proven to be one of the most effective running backs in the NFL when healthy. From 2008-09, Williams rushed for 2,632 yards and 25 touchdowns while sharing carries with Jonathan Stewart–so let’s hope the Panthers can find a way to keep him for the long run by reaching a new deal this offseason.
