Despite offensive struggles, Panthers’ defense comes through in win against Titans
The Carolina Panthers entered Saturday night’s game against the Tennessee Titans looking for their first offensive touchdown of the 2010 preseason. While the offense failed to find the end zone for the third-straight game, the Panthers found other ways to score and come through for the win. (more…)
Panthers look for first offensive touchdown of preseason against Titans
For most NFL teams, the third game of the preseason is when the first team sees the most action as they tend to play at least three quarters. For the Carolina Panthers, their third preseason game has more meaning for another reason—their first offensive touchdown of the 2010 preseason.
In two preseason games, the Panthers have scored just one touchdown—a 31-yard fumble return by cornerback C.J. Wilson against the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. Carolina has been unlucky by facing two of the top defenses in the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets, but they’ll have a chance to redeem themselves against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday night.
While there’s no reason to hit the panic button tonight considering it’s only preseason, it’s important for the Panthers’ offense to come through against the Titans. They are going through a transition process now that Jake Delhomme—now a member of the Browns—and Julius Peppers—who left Carolina for the Chicago Bears—are no longer with the team, meaning it could take some time to adjust in 2010.
Carolina may have high expectations for Jimmy Clausen in the future, but for now, Matt Moore will be the one leading the offense for at least this season. He helped the Panthers finish 4-1 over the final five games of 2009 and now, Moore needs to help the offense get out of their funk before the regular season starts.

Watered-down Carolina Panthers head to Baltimore
The Carolina Panthers will be heading up to Baltimore this evening to take on the Ravens. Thing is, you might not recognize many of the players. The Panthers lost several key players this offseason through free agency, Julius Peppers perhaps the biggest name of all.
Besides free agency, the Panthers have lost several players to injury in training camp. 11 players won’t even make the trip to Baltimore.
The Panthers have 4 quarterbacks on the roster and head coach John Fox told reporters that he expects to get all four action tonight with Matt Moore slated to get the start. Rookie QB Jimmy Clausen is excited to get on the field, telling reporters, “It’s going to be the first time live since college, so it’s going to be fun out there”.
Tonight’s game should help shed some light on just what the Panthers will have to work with this season. “There are probably 2–something guys I’ve never seen take a snap in NFL football. You have some of those guys every year from your draft class”, We just have a few more this year, Fox commented to reporters.
Former Panther arrested for attempted choking
Former Carolina Panthers LB Mark Fields was arrested Sunday after allegedly choking the mother of his daughter. The assault occurred outside of daycare center in Arizona.
Witnesses claim that Fields attacked the woman and grabbed her by the throat, and eventually threw her to the ground. Police arrested him on the scene and was ordered to have no contact with the 6 year old child. Fields was arrested on three charges.
Fields played for the New Orleans Saints before joining the Panthers for two seasons 2002 and 2004. He was voted to two Pro-Bowl teams. During his career he started 113 games, recorded 34.5 sacks, 5 interceptions, recovered 5 fumbles and forced 8 fumbles.
Tyler seeks to secure spot with Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are looking for help on the defensive line this season and DT Tank Tyler hopes to be in the mix. A third round selection by the Kansas City Chiefs and NC State player, Tyler is rehabbing from microfracture knee surgery from last year.
The 6’2″ 310 pound tackle has 82 career tackles and should be competing for a starting job on the Panthers defensive line. Carolina needs to improve their run defense which finished 22nd overall last year. John Fox likes what he sees from Tyler, telling reporters, “He’s coming along. He’s worked very hard this offseason to get healthy. I liked the way he came back from our little break before we came to camp. He’s a new player to us to some degree. So he’s still getting acclimated to what we’re doing and we think he’s an important piece”.
